I hadn’t
realized that such books had been around in the 16th century until I
came across an interesting article earlier this year: “The Scandalous Flap Books of 16th-Century
Venice”. Apparently “flap books were a
fun innovation in publishing, used for purposes both serious and satirical.” As the article shows, these flap books were
definitely intended for an adult audience:
