Today, March 3, 2016, is World Book Day in the United Kingdom and Ireland. World Book Day is a celebration
of authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, it’s a celebration of
reading.
World Book
Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading,
and is marked in over 100 countries all over the world (http://www.worldbookday.com/about/).
Canada and the United States celebrate World
Book Day on April 23,
the date chosen by UNESCO, because that is “a symbolic date for world
literature. It is on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare. and Inca
Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other
prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov,
Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo” (http://www.un.org/en/events/bookday/).
In the
United Kingdom, World Book Day is held annually on the first Thursday in March,
as April 23 clashes with school holidays, and April 23 is also the National
Saint's Day of England, St George's Day.
I think
every day should be a day to celebrate reading!
Regardless of where you live, READ.
