2017 Book-to-Film Adaptations

At the end of 2016, I blogged about 2016 literary adaptations (http://schatjesshelves.blogspot.ca/2016/12/2016-book-to-film-adaptations.html); today, I look forward to some adaptations to watch for in 2017.

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
The Ritesh Batra-directed adaptation of Barnes’s 2011 Man Booker Prize-winning novel stars Jim Broadbent as Tony Webster, a middle-aged man forced to contend with his past in unexpected ways.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
Atwood’s 1985 tale of things gone awry in a near-future theocracy will get the series treatment starring Elisabeth Moss.

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman
Jessica Chastain stars in this true story about a Polish couple who saved hundreds of lives during Nazi occupation by hiding refugees in empty cages at their Warsaw zoo.

Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach
Oscar-winning writer Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) has written the script adapting the romantic 1999 period novel of art and seduction by Deborah Moggach (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).

The Dinner by Herman Koch
Over several courses shared at a restaurant, two families meet to talk about a crime that’s been committed by their sons.  The film stars Richard Gere.

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier
A man plans to murder his cousin, played by Rachel Weisz.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed adaptation of Walls' 2005 memoir stars Brie Larson, Naomi Watts, Woody Harrelson, and Sarah Snook.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
HBO is adapting Flynn’s novel.  Amy Adams will star as a reporter who returns to her hometown to investigate the murder of two girls.
