Tomorrow,
Tuesday, November 8, 2017, is Election Day in the United States. I think everyone would agree that this has
been a campaign like no other. Before my
American readers go to the polls to vote, I thought I’d share a couple of news
items.
Back in
May, more than 450 writers signed an open letter unequivocally opposing Trump’s
candidacy. (For a copy of this letter,
go to http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/WritersOnTrump.)
Last week, Literary Hub collated comments from 20
writers from sources ranging from Twitter to the New York Times. My three
favourite quotes:
Salman
Rushdie: Trump will go on trial in
November accused of racketeering, and again in December accused of child rape. (I wasn’t aware of the latter case but it’s
true – Trump must appear before a judge on December 16.)
Ben Lerner:
It’s like when you see a toddler holding
something in their hands that they aren’t supposed to be holding and, when you
ask them about it, they claim they aren’t holding anything, because they don’t
have a very developed strategy for simulation.
John
Irving: I am seriously worried about the
number of people who are as angry, as ignorant, as misinformed or shallowly
informed as he is.
